Sorry about Day 5, I got a migraine and after it left I felt too numb to get my brain in enough working order to write complete sentences that people could actually understand. So here is day 6! :)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Day 6</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So, what do I mean by your thing? Well, as special needs parents we often don't get a lot of opportunities for "breaks". I know myself personally, would sell my left arm (I'm right handed) for a week long vacation to an all inclusive resort where the only thing expected of me was to lounge in a pool with a swim up bar. I've never been to a place like this, but I hear they exist. I've never left the country, ever. I rarely travel outside of my state, unless it is to visit family in a state that borders mine. My life is boring in the traveling sense. Honestly because the idea of traveling with special needs children in exhausting, not to mention we just don't have the means to do it. So I am forced to find my happy place right here in my own home. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What makes me happy? Music. Specifically? Country music. More specific? Country music the way it was meant to be heard, not this Taylor, who put all this pop in my country, Swift. Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Merle Haggard, George Straight, Miranda Lambert. And I sing, a song here, a song there, I sing a little all day long, if I really need to de-stress I can turn on my playlist and have my moment of zen. My real therapy comes from performing on stage. Which I don't get to do often since I got out of doing it when I had kids. Slowly but surely however, I'm getting back into it. Boy, does it feel good too. Ironically enough my Aspie girl LOATHES when I sing. You'd think it was nails on a chalk board to that child. She can't stand country music and it breaks my heart. She likes Taylor Swift, go figure, Lady Gaga, hey I can get down with her every now and then, but thankfully we've found some common ground in Adele. THANK YOU ADELE!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Where I'm going with all this is, if you can't get out every now and then for a date night, a coffee date with a friend, something to get your mind off the day to day of dealing with all that is we deal with you need to find SOMETHING that makes you feel like you. And I'll admit. Music isn't the end all cure all for me. But it is the one thing I can call mine. Some it is scrap booking, some knitting, some Farmville, some barrettes ;) So do me a favor. If you don't have "Your Thing" find it. Everyone needs something they can claim as their own.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
***And BTW before I get hate mail about Taylor Swift. I think she is a fine young woman who writes her own songs and sings. However, I do NOT believe she belongs on country radio. Thank you very much :)</div>

Wandering/Elopement is a common occurrence in the Autism and Special Needs community. A 2007 online pool through the <span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">National Autism Association, indicated 92% </span><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">of parents reported that their child/ren with autism have a tendency to wander, but no formal estimates are available.</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">I honestly can not explain what wandering is any better than </span><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">The Autism Wandering Awareness Alerts Response and Education</span><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"> </span><span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">(AWAARE) site. So I will direct you to them to find out more about it. I will link you to their <a href="http://awaare.org/faq.htm">FAQ page</a> and encourage you to tinker around their page further :)</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;"><br /></span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<span style="font-family: Verdana; font-size: x-small;">So what can you do if you have a child that wanders? Heck, I suggest this for any child that cannot communicate their name or phone number in the even they get lost and cannot find their way back home or to an adult they know. First step, a difficult to remove ID bracelet. Simple, low tech. Alert, Disability on the outside, Name and phone number on the inside. If your child has acute medical needs obviously you can expand on this. </span></div>

For a child that likes to strip their clothes or frequently remove their bracelet/anklet consider temporary tattoos! This is a link I found but I believe there are companies where you can customize your information. Be careful with these however. You don't want the information to be displayed in a way that a stranger could learn the child's name and lure them away from you. Be safe, use common sense.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
No, it isn't waterproof, it's kind of like a cellphone, but not as fragile. If you have a computer or smartphone, or even if you don't it's kind of like OnStar but for your kid. As long as it is in an area with a GPS signal they can find your child. They or you can even speak to your child to try and keep them calm. Your child can speak back. It is under $100 and there is only a small monthly service fee.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
And finally if you've made it this far and you don't have a child that wanders, thank you for reading up on the subject. I'd also like to point out something else. If you've never had a child that wanders you will never know the shear terror that strikes your heart in the moment you realize your child is gone. Therefore if you see a child out in public wearing a "leash" you cannot assume it is due to lazy parenting. It may just be that parent's way of assuring their child doesn't end up on the 10 o'clock news. Could it be a parent that just doesn't want to watch her kid? Sure, but it could also be a parent that has had one too many heart attacks that day and just wants to keep her child safe. Let's try less judgement, more understanding. The world will be a better place if we all just try that more often.<br />

As there are thunderstorms popping up throughout the area I live in it got me thinking, I used to love storms. The bigger the better. Thunder boomers I call them. Thunder, lightening, the steady down pour of rain. Don't ask me why I used to like them. I still kind of do, although now, a part of me feels anxious when I know one might be coming. I'm checking the radar. I'm checking for warnings, when it will be here, what are they calling for, how bad is it going to be? So what changed? Asperger's.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
It all started in January? February? IDK. An early storm ripped through the Midwest causing tornadoes to rip through downstate Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, and I'm sure other states as well. This obviously sparked discussions at school between the teacher and the students that caused Grace a lot of stress and anxiety. I won't go into details because I'm sure she wouldn't appreciate it being out there for the world to know about. Needless to say it caused her to hyper focus on storms/tornadoes. We were due another round of possible tornado producing storms a day or two after that. Grace was obsessing over this, she was convinced our town would be leveled. She was worried about going to school because what would they do? There are too many windows! Where would they go? How would they be safe? What about her animals at home? I needed to make sure that all the animals were taken to the basement while she was at school. But not the bedroom with windows. We can't be in a room with windows.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Thankfully that storm slipped around our town like we were in a protective bubble. I think the universe knew we just couldn't take it that day. I was hoping she'd forget the incident at school, she'd forget the discussion, but no, it seems the fear is here to stay for now. So tonight, instead of sleeping upstairs in her room she asked if she could sleep in the basement because there could be tornadoes tonight. While we're only due for possible thunderstorms, whatever she needed to do to feel safe was fine with me. She was passed out well before her normal bedtime and hopefully she'll sleep through any thunder boomers. I'm still torn, to me thunder is soothing, I love a good storm, but now that I know it stresses out my daughter so much, how can I ever find them soothing again?</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WI19eMpAMpY/T3pY44ME3FI/AAAAAAAAAIs/TgdGm_U_-BM/s1600/010.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-WI19eMpAMpY/T3pY44ME3FI/AAAAAAAAAIs/TgdGm_U_-BM/s320/010.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I don't care who started "Light It Up Blue". I don't care if you agree with that organization or not. I'm not here to agree or disagree with them, because honestly I'm new to this ballgame and I don't know a whole lot about it. So, I'm going to tell you my reasons for lighting it up blue today and for the entire month of April. Our special needs journey began with our youngest daughter over three and a half years ago. We are still no closer to a diagnosis today than we were then. A diagnosis won't change our day to day, but without one there is no ribbon, there are no groups to join, there are no diagnosis specific support groups, you're stuck in the unknown. I can spread awareness about special needs, the Special Olympics, and Spread the Word to End the Word, which I do, with my whole entire heart. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now, with Grace, there is Autism. And with the month of April, Autism Awareness, and Light it Up Blue. So I'm going to support my Aspie Girl just like I do my youngest. I'm going to change my porch light and I'm going to throw a blue lantern in my window for good measure. I'm going to shine a light on Autism. Hopefully more people will learn something from all of the posts people are putting up all over Facebook. My daughter is not rude, she lacks social skills and doesn't know how to conduct herself in social settings well. My daughter is not a dirty hobo. Clothing makes her uncomfortable and the only thing she likes are cotton t-shirts and sweat pants. She doesn't like to wash her hair and will make it clear she only does so because she's being tortured. If you don't brush her hair it won't get brushed, because that again is just torture. No she doesn't have a dot on her forehead, that is her ever present wound because she "picks" when she's stressed or in uncomfortable situations, which is pretty much all of the time. Now, she has two spots on her head and more on her arms because it's summer, ya know, short sleeves and all. So, yeah, I started rambling but you get the point. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm not lighting it up blue to annoy you for 30 days.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm not lighting up blue to make everyone who doesn't have Autism or a kid with Autism feel bad. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm not lighting it up blue because I want to be cool. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm lighting it up blue for GRACE!</div>

Please go check it out and the other bloggers that are participating as well!<br />
<br />
Day 1<br />
<br />
It's April 1st, the beginning of Autism Awareness month. In previous years this month didn't hit me personally. Sure, Shelby was probably going to end up under the PDD-NOS umbrella because of her Global Developmental Delays but it never really felt like that fit. She never had any autism traits. We are no closer to a diagnosis now than we were when our journey first began. Shelby will be six in July and she functions at a late two early three year old level in most areas. She is loving, outgoing, and very very social. She is on the go from the time she gets up until the time she goes to bed. She swings and swings and swings, both on her indoor net swing and outside. She doesn't really have sensory issues like most kids but if she's "off" it will usually help.<br />
So, ok, if that's the case with Shelby why does this year hit me personally then you may be asking? I'm getting to that. You see, I have two other kids. Grace, my oldest, is 10. She's in the 4th grade now. I'm really struggling on a place to start with this. In October or November we started seeing a therapist. Grace was having issues in school that seemed beyond "normal". Despite her teachers efforts and our efforts at home she seemed to be very stressed and anxious. She was shutting down. I couldn't reach her. I couldn't talk to her. In fact she'd barely speak to me, save a few grunts. After the therapist met with Grace on our very first session the therapist said to me, "I don't normally bring this up so quickly unless there are so many red flags I can't ignore, but...have you ever heard of Asperger's or High Functioning Autism?" And I just stared at her. I stared, and stared, and stared, and finally I said, "Oh, my, God, it's so flipping obvious isn't it?! Where has my head been? My mind NEVER went there!" And as we went back through her behaviors it was one "Aha!" moment after another!!<br />
I went home and started reading everything I could find on Asperger's and girls. At first I felt incredible guilt for not thinking of it earlier. I mean I'm her mother! I've got friends that have kids with Autism, I have a special needs child myself!!! Why did I NEVER connect the dots myself?! But the more I read the more the guilt washed away. Girls are simply harder to read than boys. They are often over looked as being "dramatic" as being "quirky", as being "immature", because their symptoms often manifest so much differently than boys. At least this is often the case with Aspie Girls. As Aspie girls grow up they learn to "mimic" their peers making it that much harder to diagnosis them. Thus the reason why Aspie girls often make it to Jr. High, High School, College, and beyond before ever getting an Asperger's or High Functioning Autism diagnosis. Some end up being mislabeled as ADHD or bi-polar, social anxiety disorders, or a combination of these. There are women in their 30's just now getting the proper diagnosis.<br />
So, we're continuing with therapy, it's helping, a little, more in us understanding each other than anything. We're holding intervention meetings at the school to determine what we can do to help her with her struggles there. They've done their testing and we're waiting on the results of another one by speech, the pediatrician agrees Asperger's is the correct path as well as the therapist. We're waiting to get into Easter Seals for our "official" diagnosis but at this point it feels pretty darn official to me. Life is a daily roller coaster. I never know what a day is going to be like from one hour to the next. So with that, thank you for reading all of this. And stay tuned for tomorrows post. What it will be? I have no idea!

I suck as a blogger. In my defense I was pretty much sick from a week before Thanksgiving until right before Christmas. At some point labs indicated I had mono(don't know when), a large infection, and strep throat. I. Was. A. Mess. During all that I was also starting Topamax for my awesome chronic migraines, so if I miss-spell words or totally just leave them out now, you know why. It makes you stupid. BUT my head doesn't hurt. Yay me! So enough whining. On to the fun stuff........<br />
<br />
So tonight I let my nut out in a big way. Meaning, have you ever had a moment where you suddenly realize you are batshit crazy? Like really, you are just, wow. Really? I'm THAT bad? I'm not that bad am I? No, yep, I'm THAT bad. So exhibit A. My friend, I'll call her "Smerin" to protect her identity ;-) posted a picture of a vinyl tree she had put on her wall over a book case. A very cute tree. Here is said tree.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-arc1Cot2i6o/TwpToGEnG3I/AAAAAAAAAHA/to9Cv9hMUaE/s1600/Exhibit+A.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-arc1Cot2i6o/TwpToGEnG3I/AAAAAAAAAHA/to9Cv9hMUaE/s320/Exhibit+A.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, knowing her as well as I do, I didn't say, "Oh so pretty, I love it!" I said, "Do me a favor...see what it looks like when you center tree trunk with the center of the bookcase? Then snap a pic and let me see it!" Wow, um, typing that out I sound neurotic as hell! So basically, I stare at this picture, willing the bookcase to move with shear mind power. My heart is racing, I begin to fidget with my hands. "Smerin" says she can't move the tree. I said, don't move the tree move the book case. Center the bookcase. Move it. Please! Because the please made the fact I was letting my nut show, ok! :) So, at this point I'm basically hyperventilating and all of my friends and all of "Smerin's" friends are thinking WHO is this woman and why does she care? This isn't HER tree or her house! Good point and I have NO FRIGGIN' IDEA! I'm sure Dr. Phil does. I would probably make Dr. Phil cry like a girl. He wouldn't know WHAT to do with the hot mess that is me but anyways I'm rambling. Ah yes, back to "Smerin". Anyway, I had just booked my ticket to "Smvirginia" on Priceline to move it myself when "Smerin" announces she moved the bookcase but doesn't like it centered. The other way is more, how did she put it? Oh yes, "whimsical". Whimsical, WHIMSICAL?! I mean, really, what, no, surely not, I mean, what? "Did you take a picture?!!" I asked, calmly. And then she posted this heavenly site to be hold....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tN26HDYcNok/TwpXeou5q2I/AAAAAAAAAHI/o7y1kESy7xg/s1600/Exhibit+B.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-tN26HDYcNok/TwpXeou5q2I/AAAAAAAAAHI/o7y1kESy7xg/s320/Exhibit+B.jpg" width="239" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Almost immediately my heart slowed, my breathing returned to normal, and all was right with the world again. Sure the marker on the top could be put with the rest of the markers on the bottom shelf, but the trunk was center with the shelf and even lined up with the candle thing. It was glorious. It wasn't whimsical, it was GLORIOUS! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So it was after this and talking with some friends that I realized, wow, I have some issues. I don't really have things on my walls because I can never find the "perfect" place to put them. My bed is in the center of the wall it's on. My tv, is in the center of the wall it's on. I'm not crazy about everything. I wish I loved to keep everything spotless, I know there are others that would love that too. But darn it, when I let my nut show, I let it show in a BIG way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both;">
<div style="text-align: center;">
One of the biggest things that drives me crazy in my own home is this...</div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NMT0l76bi3c/TwpaJE5ZL1I/AAAAAAAAAHY/Lwzj21ZVqnM/s1600/017.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NMT0l76bi3c/TwpaJE5ZL1I/AAAAAAAAAHY/Lwzj21ZVqnM/s320/017.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Do you see it? Think real hard...not the curtain...I took a panel down to measure it, I'm making new ones. But yes that is bugging me them not being "even" in the pic. The vent, you see it? Now you do. It is NOT center with the window! My question is WHO would put a window NOT center with a vent or a vent NOT center with a window? Crazy right?! When you close the curtains the vent should be centered between the two like a pretty centered masterpiece but NO. It's off center glaring at me like menacing gaping hole just teasing me with it's off centeredness. I have asked my husband how hard it would be to move the vent over and he looked at me like I grew three heads. I'm guessing it wouldn't be easy. This bugs me, every stinkin' day. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So, whether you like things centered, whether you have to count things, whether you have to check to see if the stove is off before you can sleep at night, whatever it is that you do that lets your nut show. Know this, YOU are NOT, alone! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<3</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just noticed this...but I center the text in my blog!!!! *snort*</div>

<br />
If you're not confused then good for you! If you are confused I shall explain.<br />
<br />
You see a "plunger" is someone who will be jumping into a freezing cold body of water during the middle of winter.<br />
<br />
Why on EARTH would anyone do that? Well it is to benefit the Special Olympics. Specifically in my neck of the woods the <a href="http://www.soill.org/">Special Olympics of Illinois</a>. This past June Shelby participated in her first <a href="http://www.soill.org/content.php?sec=Get%20Involved&cat=Young%20Athletes%20Program">Special Olympics Young Athletes</a> event during the Illinois SOIL Summer Games. We were blown away. The atmosphere is amazing, it restored our faith in the world. The athletes, their families, everyone was there united. In today's world that was such an amazing feeling!! The Young Athletes is a part of SO for the younger kids, the pre-athletes you could say. It is designed for kids 2-7 to introduce them to the world of sports. Kids with intellectual disabilities and neuro-typical kids play side by side. The athletes are introduced to sports that give them a taste of what being an athlete in the Special Olympics organization would be like. I get teary just thinking of all the love, acceptance, and understanding I felt just by being there. Despite the heat Shelby had the time of her life!<br />
<br />
Our team for the 2012 Polar Plunge is Shiverin' For Shelby. We will be "plunging" at Miller Park Lake in Bloomington, IL. Visit our team page here and consider donating to this wonderful organization that means so much to our family. <a href="http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/shiverinforshelby/2012-polar-plunge-bloomington">http://www.firstgiving.com/fundraiser/shiverinforshelby/2012-polar-plunge-bloomington</a> If you are local and would like to join us you are more than welcome to! Each "plunger" must raise a minimum of $75. Let's make this a great year and hopefully many more to come, that is if I ever thaw out!<br />
<br />
Updates on other family happenings coming soon. Just gotta figure out what I'm gonna say...<br />
<br />
Below are pictures from the summer games! Please excuse Blogger for distorting the colors...that is Blogger not me...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr<br />

"Everyone is a genius. But if you judge a fish on its ability to climb a tree, </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
it will forever live its whole live believing that it is stupid."</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
~Albert Einstein~</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X7y89XdSPyA/TpjdQloomBI/AAAAAAAAAE4/vP_3IIFh3UY/s1600/063.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-X7y89XdSPyA/TpjdQloomBI/AAAAAAAAAE4/vP_3IIFh3UY/s320/063.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Would you EVER call that beautiful little girl above a retard? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That would be mean wouldn't it? I hope your answers were no and yes. However, I'm sure that you've heard someone say "you're retarded, she's retarded, that's retarded" and you didn't even blink. Heck, you yourself may have said it at one point or another. Or in reaction to something, have said or heard said, "RETARD!". These may just seem like words in everyday speech, another way to say "stupid". Well it isn't JUST a word. It's a hurtful, hateful, derogatory word. Special needs kids have to struggle every day to do the things "typical" people do with ease. Often times they do it with the biggest brightest smile on their faces. They have a way of restoring your faith in humanity, a way of showing you that life is what you make it, and they choose to make it GREAT! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes, the word retarded is still used, even in the medical community, however even that is being phased out. And let's be real. When someone uses the word retarded in their speech 99.99999% of the time they are NOT using it to describe someone's medical diagnosis. They are using it to degrade some one, some thing. They are using it to describe someone as the dumbest of dumb. They aren't being nice. Period. Just like the N-word, just like every other derogatory term used to describe a group of people based on color, religion, or heritage, the R-word should be phased out of our vocabulary and our children should be raised better. If you think the word is ok, then I challenge you to look at the picture above and call her a retard. Tell that innocent little girl, that does nothing but love people, she's retarded. Look at a picture of someone with Downs Syndrome and call them that ugly word, look at your neighbor down the street, still feel good about using it? I hope not. If you want to be a part of the change then make a pledge, right now, to erase that word from your vocabulary and to not tolerate it from others. Speak up, on person CAN make a difference! If you find the need, print my daughter's picture and next time someone challenges you about it, or says the word, show them Shelby and tell them to call her that to her face, with her mama around. Commit to being the change we need in this world. I will now post a popular PSA video and the link where you can join others in Spreading the Word to End the Word! </div>

They are an app developer with many apps aimed at helping children develop skills in the areas of speaking and writing. It is designed to help special needs children and those on the autism spectrum. However there is no reason it wouldn't also be beneficial to neuro typical children. So let me break it down for ya. I credit A4cwsn for reviews and app descriptions. For video demos of the apps and full reviews please check out the links after each one on the Apps For Children with Special Needs website! Most apps are in the $2.99-$5.99 range and geared towards but not exclusively for special needs children. Please check out MobileEd's apps and spread the word to your friends. They do amazing things and their generosity towards A4cwsn knows no bounds! Thank you Gary James and Mobile Education for doing what you do for our very special kiddos! Now, share this blog post to anyone and everyone. Facebook, Twitter, Cafemom, if it'll let you share this do it! lol Now back to my PTO stuff, Open House is tomorrow! Eeeek!<br />

Back to school has been crazy. I thought once I had all three kids in school I'd have some free time, but oh no! Let's just say our flexible spending account is looking like Paris Hilton on a shopping spree. Oy vey. Yes this has NOTHING to do with Legos.<br />
<br />
So, I was cleaning on Friday and it was nice so I had the curtains and windows open letting the fresh air in. For ONCE it wasn't too hot and before long it will be too cold. Yes, I know STILL not talking about Legos. Well, because I had the curtains open (normally have them closed to keep the heat out) I noticed, geesh those windows are nasty! Between the dogs and Shelby they never stood a chance. So, I know that it is going to take some serious scrubbing and scraping to get that crap off, but I couldn't find my straight blade. Then I spotted it, a bright orange Lego on the floor! Aha! Flat edge, but not dangerous to leave around like a straight blade, well not dangerous to children anyways. I'm sure many of us has stepped on one of those suckers at the wrong time! And wouldn't you know, sprayed that window down, scraped my Lego, and presto chango, clean windows. I was so stinkin' thrilled with myself for thinking of that I wanted to say go you, but nobody was around for me to brag to, hence the blog post. And you know what? It's about time those suckers started earning their keep, I might think twice before throwing the next one I step on away!<br />
<br />
Planned upcoming blog posts (to hold me accountable)....<br />
1) Doctors, blood draws,IEP's, OH MY!<br />
2)Organized Chaos<br />
<br />
I've posted before and I'll keep posting about it until everyone in the world knows and loves Apps For Children with Special Needs. Please go to <a href="http://www.a4cwsn.com/">http://www.a4cwsn.com</a> and look into supporting the campaign to get <a href="http://a4cwsn.com/ipads-in-50-states/">50 ipads/ in 50 states/ for 50 special needs children</a>!<br />
<br />
Favorite app of the week:<a href="http://a4cwsn.com/2011/08/injini-childhood-development-game-suite/"> Injini!!!</a> Yes it is a pricey app but SOOOOOOOOOOO worth it. It's like a dozen apps in one with more add ons promised to come. They now have a lite version so you can try it out before purchasing! Read more about it through <a href="http://a4cwsn.com/2011/08/injini-childhood-development-game-suite/">A4cwsn!</a><br />

She tends to be getting tired in the afternoon but is trudging through it and will hopefully adjust. I can say this, bedtime has been a BREEZE! Normally she comes out of her room at least a dozen times to ask for a drink, to go potty, to get a dog to come lay with her, and so on. The past three nights have been a dream! Goodnight Shelby I love you, zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. LOL<br />
So, have I been enjoying my time off? Well, Monday yes was nice and relaxing. Tuesday my middle child had a dentist apt. Run to town, do the apt, get him back to school, then curriculum night, yay! Today had to take Shelby to the Pediatric Ophthalmologist 45 minutes away, 2 hr long apt(which went well btw, no changes), then back for my oldest daughter's curriculum night. My husband asked if I had a day where something didn't need to be done and I had to look at my calendar. I'm happy to report Thursday and Friday look good. We'll see! All three are liking their teachers and liking school, I'm counting my blessings, now ask me again once homework really kicks in!<br />
A few things I've noticed without the kids here. When I clean something it stays clean, I mean, who knew?! I have a mini panic attack when I can't find Shelby only to remember she's at school. And there are not NEARLY as many funny things happening now that Shelby is gone for a good portion of the day. So now, I think I will find new and creative ways to torture my husband for my own personal amusement, he works second shift ;) So, ideas on how to do that?! *insert evil laugh here* This is what he gets for not reading my blog. And don't any of you that know him give him a heads up either! That'll learn him! Tehehehehehehehe!<br />

Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-91443744798209222092011-08-21T19:47:00.000-07:002011-08-21T19:47:38.259-07:00Back to school!Shelby goes back to school tomorrow. Her first FULL day of school. She's done half days for the past two years but this is new. Same class, new teacher, new routine. Lots of old, lots of new. Shelby is my third child, my baby, my last. With the other two the first day of school was like an adventure to see what they'd learn, what they'd do next. There was no anxiety, no fear, no worry. Just happiness at seeing another milestone take place. It must be the baby thing. Now that Shelby is in school all day I have no more babies at home.<br />
You add that with the challenges Shelby faces and it just makes it harder. I've always been there for her. I always know what she is up to and for the first time I won't. From 8:15am-2:50pm she will be living a life separate from mine. Weird. Will she have enough energy, will she get upset she can't go home, will she wander, will she do good at lunch and recess with all of those kids? I KNOW it will be ok, I KNOW she'll do great, I KNOW she'll have the best year yet but still I'm her mommy!<br />
OK, enough pity party. Let's focus on what fun I can have with this. First, I can enjoy the house staying clean for a good portion of the day. I can take a shower with NO interruptions. I can watch any show I want. I can go to the bathroom in peace. I can take a nap if I am tired. And then to make my husband happy I'll search for a part time job ;)<br />
Now, something good I'd like to share. The other day I said to my husband, "man my back HURTS". Shelby then said, "Go lay down on the couch, it'll stop". *insert jaw drop here* This may not seem like a big deal to parents of "typical" kids. But, this is the FIRST time I can ever recall Shelby hearing something and giving such an appropriate, empathetic response! This was awesome! HUGE! So proud!Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-15360462656222613512011-08-17T20:10:00.000-07:002011-08-17T20:10:56.918-07:00OK, why does it smell good in here?!Now, typically a room smelling good would not be a bad thing right? Well, if you have a "typical" kind of house it may just be a good thing. Here however, not so much. Now unless I have my spray bottle in my hand while I clean or I just dropped some Scentsy cubes in my warmer I'm inclined to have a mini panic attack at any overwhelming scent. So a note to future visitors, if you like to wear strong perfume or randomly spray stuff to see what it smells like, give this mom a heads up k? lol<br />
So, back to why good smell = bad. A strong scent usually indicates Miss Shelby has gotten into something. I cannot tell you how many bottles of cleaner I've been through. I'll be cleaning, turn my back, grab another cleaner and forget the one currently being left unattended and next thing I know...*sniff...sniff, sniff, sniff* "Shelby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Do NOT worry, these are non toxic and environmentally friendly cleaners. *informercial voice* "I'm not only a customer I'm also an advertising rep!" No, seriously I am! So it's only costing me money to have Shelby "help" it is not a call to poison control! lol Anyhooo THAT is the cleaner scenario.<br />
Then we have the mystery smells. The "mmmmmmm I love the smell of hubby's deodorant, wait a minute...SHELBY!!!!!!!!!!!!" Or "mmmmmmmmm my perfume smells good, can't believe I can still smell it that....SHELBY!!!!!!!!!!!" Or "That clean fresh powder scent is ni.......gosh darnit SHELBY!!!!!!!!!!!". At this point you are probably thinking, put your stuff up woman! Well I would if...1) I didn't have the memory of a mom and forgetting my name half the time. 2) Everyone else didn't have the memory of a fly. 3) I wasn't constantly distracted when I have stuff out by a ringing phone, screaming child, or a grown man child needing assistance finding his stuff. And finally 4) The fact that even though you "think" you've found a Shelby proof spot, eventually she proves to you just how silly that idea was.<br />
<br />
So I leave you with pictures from an incident a few weeks ago, she sure had fun! I knew something was wrong when I smelled it, I confirmed it as I turned the corner and saw this...<br />

Seeing our 5yr old, developmentally delayed child, complete her first 7 piece puzzle we were hooked. We stopped just shy of robbing a bank to get one ;)<br />
<br />
2)Shelby has been able to show us that she has absorbed a lot more than what we thought. Through apps like "Spot the Dot" by Ruckus Media she has shown she knows several colors and can even find them in a "busy" background. "Shape Puzzle HD" has shown us our little girl LOVES puzzles! "My Play Home" by Shimon Young, has allowed her to explore a house and what all you can do in it without making an actual mess of mine! lol She can run as much water as she wants, "cook" things on the stove, and open and close curtains without pulling them down! And all I have to do to clean her "house" is push a button, where can I get one of those, hmmmmmmm? There are sooo many more that I love so I'll just show a pic of our faves! I've got stuff to do and this Signing Time episode is only so long!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zgFTIyUBPFU/TkqTtHNADSI/AAAAAAAAAD4/rsbEF2vuivg/s1600/001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zgFTIyUBPFU/TkqTtHNADSI/AAAAAAAAAD4/rsbEF2vuivg/s320/001.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3eumBI-jz_w/TkqTuWfv32I/AAAAAAAAAD8/IczipIy82Ps/s1600/002.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-3eumBI-jz_w/TkqTuWfv32I/AAAAAAAAAD8/IczipIy82Ps/s320/002.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
4)When in doctor offices, restaurants, grocery stores, or anywhere a child is expected to be quiet and sit still the iPad is a parent's dream come true!<br />
<br />
5)While Shelby is verbal the iPad gets her talking about things and showing you all the cool stuff it does. I can only imagine how this device opens up a world for a non-verbal child!<br />
<br />
6)The iPad has given me something to be passionate about. I want to see the special needs world explode with the iPad. Speech therapists, teachers, special ed classrooms, doctors, therapists, insurance companies everyone should know what this amazing product is capable of and what a life changer it truly is.<br />
<br />
7)The iPad allows Shelby to accomplish things she normally hasn't been able to do and to see the smile on her face when she completes something is worth so much more than words can say!<br />
<br />
And NO I did not get paid or asked to mention any of the apps and developers listed.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I should definitely have my feet solidly on grow up ground. Well when you spend your days surrounded by kids you can loose that grown up feeling. Somewhere between NickJr and Teen Disney it all just gets lost. Some days I'm lucky if I've got a bra on by noon. Imagine my panic if someone comes knocking before then. No, solicitor, I'm not that p.o.'d I just have my arms crossed to keep my knockers from smacking you in the eye. I'm doing you a favor, for realz.<br />
<br />
Where was I?<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, lost grownupiness. So tonight after a particularly stressful bedtime I'm thinkin' what can I do to make myself feel better, feel adult like? Well, I could drink like a fish, there is that half bottle of tequila that has been collecting dust since my anniversary or there is that Miller Lite that has been in there for months as well. Hmmmm ok, I talk about drinking quite a bit, wishful thinking? lol I don't like alcohol much. I envy the moms that can talk about wine like they've grown up around vineyards. I can't do that, I think most wine tastes like vomit, YES I went there. I can just envision the wino's shaking their glasses at me. Sue me. lol Don't really though cause I'm broke, can't get milk out of a rock folks.<br />
<br />
And again I was where?<br />
<br />
Oh yeah, so here is a trick I've discovered. I can put ANYTHING in a wine glass and feel more sophisticated, more adult, less mommy, more me. It's silly I know really I'm just tricking my brain but you know what? It works! Try it! Right now I've got a strawberry kiwi drink in mine but you can try milk, juice, tea, pudding(yes pudding), water, whatever floats your boat. And if you really want to have fun put something that looks like booze in your wine glass and start throwing 'em back. Pretty soon your significant other will get all wide eyed and wonder what has got into you and will they be able to take advantage of "drunk mom". It's hilarious when they can't figure out why you're not smashed. This will work better if you have an empty booze bottle to pour it from. OH want to have even MORE fun? Do this around friends, family, or the in-laws! Bottoms up!<br />
<br />
You're welcome! lol<br />

Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-19569599455318558232011-08-08T21:23:00.000-07:002011-08-18T07:27:20.218-07:00Pay no attention...Shelby has no problems being naked. However up until this point she really has kept it to trying to keep from getting dressed after a bath. Today however she decided that after she went to the bathroom this was the time to go sans clothes. We were sitting outside when she went in to go potty. She came back out naked. After attempts to get her to go back inside on her own failed I tried to get a hold of her and escort her back inside. She took this as the opportunity to go streaking through the yard. Try keeping a straight face as you are chasing a naked child through your yard. Yeah, it's not so easy. Finally I can't remember what I threatened to take away but whatever it was got her inside but she was now contained. Perfect timing, let's take a bath and get your jammies on girly. Practice for spring break college edition is OVER! lol I then proceed to throw the naked minion over my shoulder, up the stairs, and straight into the bath! Score one for mom! Let us hope this was a rare occurrence and she doesn't discover the joy of being nude.<br />
<br />
I'll keep it short tonight with a conversation I had with my oldest(9yrs old) earlier today...<br />
<br />
Me: Grace, would you like to get your hair cut short?<br />
<br />
Grace: Why?<br />
<br />
Me: Because you don't like to brush it and scream when I do it.<br />
<br />
Grace: Sure, if I get cancer it will grow back eventually!<br />
<br />
Me: *insert confused wtf look here* Uh...............<br />
<br />
Yeah I couldn't think of what to say after that. Grace is interesting because you honestly never know what will pop out of her mouth. The child remembers EVERYTHING! Any conversation, any event, something she saw on tv and these random memories pop out when you least expect them and confuse the tar out of you. I suspect this was what led to this gem of a conversation. Oy, kids!Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-28722736116534548642011-08-04T20:52:00.000-07:002011-08-04T20:52:52.539-07:00Pffffffffffffffffffttttttttttttttttttttt...............That is the sound of me releasing air in an exasperated fashion. No funny post tonight. The day went fine but from dinner on just....pft. Shelby thought it would be hilarious to throw food at her brother during dinner. We're talking sauce covered food at her brother. Then she got out her bag of cherries later and thought they made a great item to throw, you guessed it, her brother. She thought this was a riot. I calmly took the cherries, put them away, and began to cry. Yes I cried like a baby for a good 20 minutes or more.<br />
<br />
I cracked like a nut. Seriously...while Shelby doesn't normally throw food this is wasn't any worse than anything else she's done but I just apparently need a tear fest. It drained me.<br />
<br />
We are leaving for Wisconsin in the morning so my next post might not be until Sunday or Monday.<br />
<br />
A little family bio for those that are curious and for my husband who says I need to mention our other two kids :)<br />
<br />
Grace-our first born, she's 9 going on 19. We are in serious trouble when the hormones kick in with that one! lol<br />
<br />
Wyatt-our only boy, he's 7, and a carbon copy of his father.<br />
<br />
J(onathon)-my manchild. He hates it when I call him that, but seriously some days I wonder how old he is! ;)<br />
<br />
There you have it...the fam has all been introduced, and I'm sure you'll be hearing more about them in the future.<br />
<br />
Don't forget to look up Gary @<a href="http://www.a4cwsn.com/"> www.a4cwsn.com</a>!Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-1500614133887540672011-08-03T21:09:00.000-07:002011-08-04T11:33:44.869-07:00The adventures of being barefoot... So you wouldn't think walking around barefoot inside your house could be an adventure but in my house it is. Oh is it ever! Walking around your foot hits something wet. First thought is it warm? Warm most likely means pee, is it pee from the dog, from a child, you just don't know. If it's cold it could still be pee but at least you can pretend it isn't. So, if it's cold the next question is what is the color? Will it stain? If it is colorless it could still be pee or it could be water, you can still pretend it's water. Clean it up, spray some cleaner but still pretend you didn't just step in pee(dang pound puppy). If you really want to know you can sniff it but really who WANTS to know.<br />
<br />
Now, let's move onto solids. I know what you're saying, please don't. But, I'm gonna, because after all WE are on an adventure! I personally would like to think the world of solids, or, semi-solids is much more interesting. Remember we are going off of how things FEEL, we leave the looking for after we've had a mini panic attack about what it is we think we just stepped in. So, if it's warm, really not much good can come out of this because we have a rescue puppy in the house, warm usually means you just stepped in a nice fresh pile of poo. Congratulations you did NOT win a prize. Is it squishy? Is it cold? Cold can be good, because cold usually is not poo. I like cold. Did it mash into the carpet or onto your foot? Did it crunch(please don't be something expensive)? Did one of the kids go ewwwww after seeing you step in it? Solids can be so many things but in this house it typically is of course poo or some sort of food substance. But you won't know until you stop clutching your chest and look down. Like just now, I stepped on something cold and squishy under my desk, it was a wedge of clementine(little orange).<br />
<br />
But Virginia, why don't you just wear shoes? And what, risk not feeling that it is poo and spreading it from one end of the house to the other? Oh yes now THAT sounds like an adventure!<br />
<br />
You too can play this game. Come over to my house before I've had a chance to do a floor check, take off your shoes, put your chin up and start walkin'! So who's first?! Seriously I thought I'd have a line outside my do/r! No?<br />
<br />
So stuck on Shelby today were cherries from a bag I left too close to her in the shopping cart. She's so proud isn't she?!<br />

Please do me a favor and check out <a href="http://www.a4cwsn.com/">www.a4cwsn.com</a> and their 50ipads/50states/50special needs kids campaign. Then head on over to Facebook and "like" them. When they hit 5,000 likes(they are wicked close) Gary will give away 5, yes 5 iPads! iPads to a special needs child can literally change their life! A mom can hear "I love you" for the first time through a text to speech app. A child can feel the sense of accomplishment after completing their first ever puzzle. Siblings can finally sit down and have something that they can BOTH do. It is absolutely a life changer! *******Please only like A4cwsn if you are interested in helping the special needs community or are a part of the community.Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-49014840915130088252011-08-02T14:07:00.000-07:002011-08-02T14:13:33.519-07:00I'm happy for you, no, I really am. I just need a minute... It's back to school time! Yay! Seriously I love my hooligans I really do but after 24/7 with them all summer mama is ready for a break! An added bonus Miss Shelby will be in school a full day this year. I'm sorry, what was that? I can't hear you over the sound of angels singing. Anyways where was I going with this post? Oh, yeah, I'm happy for you.<br />
<br />
So, because it is back to school time there are going to be parents saying "my baby is going to school this year, my big boy/girl is officially a kindergartner", and so on and so forth. Kindergarten is a milestone year. It's the year where your preschooler, your "baby" is growing up and becoming part of the school aged minions. I get why they are nostalgic, I get why it is bittersweet, it is something to be celebrated. I get it and I'm happy for you, I really am.<br />
<br />
But here is why I need a minute...<br />
<br />
I'm fairly new to the world of special needs, within the past year and a half it has gone from "needing more time" to "need to find an answer/diagnosis". So being the newbie that I am I still and I imagine I always will take a pause when Shelby's peers hit their "typical" milestones and we just aren't there yet. I am NOT ashamed, I am NOT embarrassed, I am NOT disappointed in my little girl at ALL. I am so proud of her and the progress she has made. Just remember we didn't plan for this, nobody does. You get so absorbed in your new world that sometimes you forget there is another world running parallel to your's and every now and then you intersect. These I like to think are the "pauses".<br />
<br />
Shelby should be a kindergartner, she should be getting excited, making new friends, and "growing up in front of my eyes". She should be gaining that independence and maturity that comes with Kindergarten and she's not. And, I'm ok with that. In fact this next year is full of promises and who knows what lies ahead of us. She will be doing a full day of ECE-SE and we hope that with the extra time and repeating in the afternoon what she did that morning things will start to "stick". In the end Shelby is Shelby, and she is awesome! So to look at is as a glass half full kind of situation, while your baby is growing up, I get to hold onto mine for a little while longer.Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12980849723835736333noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3058725141366402885.post-38115997222586583902011-08-01T12:41:00.000-07:002011-08-01T12:41:55.606-07:00I have no clue what I'm doing...This seems to be common in my life. I have no clue what I'm doing and yet, eventually, with a few curse words, some pain, and a new found appreciation for professionals, it gets done. I wanted to start a blog after joining up with a community called <a href="http://www.a4cwsn.com/">Apps For Children With Special Needs</a>. Many of the people on their Facebook page have blogs. And I thought to myself, hey, I can do this! I was inspired to get our story out there and maybe help Gary James in his mission to get iPads into the hands of special needs children.<br />
<br />
I am NOT an English major. I am a stay at home mom to three kids with about 6 weeks of community college education before I found out I was to be a mommy. Please do not expect perfect grammar, sentence structure, and if spell check doesn't catch it I won't either! My goal is to make you laugh, I might make you cry, and hopefully give make you say, "I have so been there!". If you like what I've said let me know, if you don't, well, follow the "if you don't have something nice to say, say nothing at all" rule our mamas hopefully taught us. Seriously nobody is MAKING you read this blog.<br />
<br />
So, the name. Why "Stuck On Shelby"? Well for this you would need to know Shelby. She is 5yrs old with the mentality of a late 2yr old early 3yr old. She's not diagnosed at the moment so I can't answer any questions about that. We're on a journey to find out though. Anyhoo, Shelby is the type of child that can get dirty on her way OUT of the bathtub. I'm not kidding. Something is always stuck to this child, food, whatever substance that was left where she could get it, you name it she has probably had it stuck to her. I also chose that name because anyone that sees her picture or meets her immediately falls in love with her and they become stuck on her :)<br />
<br />
So, to prevent this post from becoming crazy long I will promise to get to my two other lovely children and the man child later ;)<br />
<br />
Here is my Miss Shelby...<br />
